I’ll Give You the Sun was such an amazing book! I was sobbing so hard, and just AHSKAGDHGAKGDKAFKHSKDSFSDJHKFGSKFKS!!!!
For the first half of the book, I honestly couldn’t even bring myself to care, and then, all of a sudden, it was absolutely spectacular! Because of this, I had a difficult time deciding what to rate it.
The second half of the book? Amazing. Wonderful. Marvellous. Insanely good.
The first half though? Bleh. I was so bored. In fact, I almost DNF’d it. WOW, am I glad I didn’t!
The writing was SO beautiful! It was just… I don’t even know. It was lovely though. There was so many absolutely beautiful lines, and wow! That’s all I have to say about it, WOW!
Not to mention when she described the art… I could almost see it!
The plot was also really interesting. It was told alternating perspectives, between two twins, Noah and Jude. Noah’s chapters take place when they’re thirteen, and Jude’s when they’re sixteen. Slowly, you start to figure out what happened in-between. It’s so intriguing, and I believe it’s the only reason I bothered to finish.
It starts out with a chapter from Noah, and then you get one from Jude’s perspective, and SO much has changed. From then, I knew I needed to know what had happened, and I had to finish, no matter how much I hated it. Thank goodness for intriguing plots.
My favourite thing about this though, was of course, the characters.
Noah… wasn’t my favourite. I thought he had a very interesting, well developed character, and he was nice enough (mostly), but I just didn’t love him.
Jude however, was wonderful. I way preferred her chapters. She was so great, and super superstitious. And she refused to believe she was falling in love. And I loved that. She would find herself wondering about him, and then she would catch herself, and be like, ‘not that I care.’ and I was just laughing, and laughing, and laughing, because obviously she did care. Also her superstitions. She was sooooooooo superstitious. I swear every other conversation she had, she mentioned/though about at least one of her superstitions. Or she’d make some morbid comment. That happened a lot too. It’s great.
Did I mention I love Jude?
Then there was Oscar. You know how much I said I loved Jude? Multiply that by five. Or maybe ten. That’s how much I love Oscar. Oscar is
sort of most definitely the Bad Boy Who Has a Tragic Past, but I admit, I love this trope. He’s also a shameless flirt, and I absolutely LOVE his relationship with Jude. They’re so funny together! Also he’s like three years older than her, but I don’t really care, and I ship them so hard!
Another character I like is… Guillermo? I think? I can’t remember if that’s his name…?*When he’s first introduced, he’s drunk, and throwing furniture, but… once he’s sober, he’s great. And very grumpy. And sort of terrifying. But great.
*Gah, I hate character names!
Overall, I’ll Give You the Sun was and amazing book. Yes, I was bored to death at first, but once I got into it, it was so spectacular! I think this is an absolute must read book for everyone. It was just… wow. Wow, wow, wow!
Have you read I’ll Give You the Sun? Are you planning to? What did you think?
