5 stars
OH MY GOSH, THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Renegades was one of my most anticipated releases like, ever, and boy I was not disappointed! I am SO glad I got it so soon, and I am just in so much awe of the awesomeness that is this book! I love it!
Also, I sort of really need the sequel. Like, right now ideally.* Because THAT ENDING!!! Arrrggggggghhhhhh!!!
*It doesn’t even have a name yet!!! Aaahhhhhhhhh!
Plot
The blurb of this gave me very little idea what this was about. I really liked that, because I always read blurbs, and then usually end up wishing I hadn’t, but this one didn’t give too much away, so I won’t say a lot about the plot, just that it was really interesting, and although it’s not the most complex plot ever, it had quite a few layers to it.It was the tiniest bit predictable, I will admit, but honestly, after Cinder I sort of expected that, and it was way LESS predictable, so that was a plus.
I’ve also heard a lot of people complaining that this was really slow…? And I’m confused… It didn’t seem particularly slow to me…? Personally I found the plot engaging, and fairly fast paced… and I read it in a day and a half, which I normally can’t do with super slow books, so… I didn’t think it was slow, possibly I’m just being silly, but… I liked the plot. The plot definitely wasn’t Renegades strong point, but I thought it was a solid plot, and was very enjoyable.SettingI loved the setting renegades had. Like The Lunar Chronicles, it was futuristic, but other than that, it was very different. It took me a while to figure out how exactly it worked, but it cleared itself up pretty quick.Basically, there were these people with superpowers (They called them all prodigies), then there were the Renegades, who were the superheroes, and the people in charge and then was the various gangs of supervillain-ish people, the most important* of them being the Anarchists.
At first I was very confused about who was who, and what the difference between a prodigy and a Renegade was, but once I got it figured out, I thought it was really well done. The superpowers were also really cool! Some of them were more normal, invincibility, invisibility, flight, whatever, but most of them were really unique. The ability to bring what you drew to life, or to turn into a swarm of butterflies. So cool!I just really love the world, it was SO cool, and I don’t know, I just really like it. I honestly have no clue why I like it quite as much as I do… It’s just so wonderful!I also love that it’s not black and white. The Renegades don’t make the best leaders, and a couple of the best characters are Anarchists. Personally, I’m on the Renegades side, because I really like their leaders as people at least, if not as leaders, where as the Anarchists… I liked some of them a lot, but their morals are definitely more questionable, and some of them are awful. Some of the Renegades are awful too of course, but… a smaller percentage I think.

*To the story at least, they weren’t necessarily the most important to the world… they probably weren’t. But they were the coolest.

Characters

Obviously this was my favourite part about it. The characters always are.
SO many of them (Like, ALL OF THEM) were well developed, and wonderful!

-Nova was wonderful! She was snarky, and badass, and I just really loved her! She was working with the Anarchists, and was bent on revenge, and yet she was also very… not nice exactly, but… she had a good heart, and was willing to do anything for her friends. Even if those friends possibly had very questionable morals.

-Adrian was the other MC, and I really liked him. Not quite as much as Nova, but he was really great, and although he had a heart of gold, and really cared about everyone, he certainly wasn’t perfect. He did a lot of dumb things, and he felt very human. He was really nice, and I really like him.*

-Oscar was hilarious! He was another one of the Renegades, and he is so funny! He’s one of my favourite characters for sure. He provides a lot of comic relief, but he also does have quite a well developed character.

-Ruby was also great. I can’t really pinpoint what it was about her, but I liked her a lot, and she was a well developed character. And she had a really cool superpower. When she bleeds, her blood crystallizes into weapons. For some reason I really like that superpower. Like, super cool right?

-Danna wasn’t a huge character, but I hope she’s in the next book more, because I really liked her, and I’d like to see more of her.

-Honey was… intersting. She was one of the Anarchists, and she was quite the drama queen. I’m not entirely sure I trust her, but she seemed sort of sweet, and… I don’t even know. I like her so far though.

-Leroy was also actually a favourite. He was one of the Anarchists, so I wasn’t sure about him at first, but he grew on me. He was sort of fatherly to Nova, and he never put any pressure on her. Even when she was maybe the only one who could help their cause, he made it clear that it was up to her. If she didn’t want to do it, she shouldn’t. From that moment on, I liked him.

*Woah, how many times did I use the word ‘really’ there?

Over All

Renegades was SO good!! I am officially a huge fan, and can I please have the next one now?!?! I need it! AHSAGDSJHDGHSKFGSDKFHSDKFSKFSDHK!!!!
I’m SO happy I got my hands on this, and OH MY GOSH IT WAS SO GOOD!!!!!! And I’m just repeating myself now, so I should probably stop.
I should also probably NOT reread this yet. No Iris, that would be a BAD idea! Go read the million other books on your tbr.

Anyways, Renegades is amazing! Read it! It is SO good!!

Are you going to read Renegades? Have you already? What did you think? Aren’t the superpowers SO cool? Renegades or Anarchists?

    • Yeah, it was amazing! It’s funny, I didn’t see it marketed anywhere… I didn’t even know it existed until a month or two ago!
