The NOPE tag – Lots and Lots of (Mostly Good Natured) Ranting!

The Nope Tag

The NOPE Tag

I was tagged for this back in… er… January… by Amber @ The Literary Phoenix. I’m only finally getting around to doing this, but it looks like so much fun, and I’ve been looking forward to doing this one! The NOPE Tag was originally created by A Booktube Book.

Anyways, lets get started shall we?

Divider

1. NOPE. Ending.

A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage, or simply because the ending was crappy.

So I actually like all of these books, but I would say they all had nope endings… In many different ways.

 Warrior Witch Liar's Moon*

  • Shadow Scale – I love love love this book! Just… The ending had me furious. HOW could those things happen?! I don’t however, feel nearly as strongly about this one after reading Tess of the Road. It cleared some stuff up, and I’m much happier about it now.
  • Warrior Witch – The ending to this one was very bittersweet. For a long time after I read it, I felt like it had ruined the series for me. But, looking back at it now, I actually don’t mind the ending. I think I was just a bit too young to fully appreciate it.
  • Liar’s Moon – This one is a nope ending because it ended in a HUGE cliffhanger, and then THE PUBLISHERS CANCELLED THE LAST BOOK!!!!!!! I am SO mad! I desperately need to know what happens!
*Also an we just appreciate the aesthetic of those three covers together?

the Golden Compass2. NOPE. Protagonist.

A main character you dislike and drives you crazy.

Okay, so I’m actually only about eighty pages into this one, so I suppose she might get better, but I’m really not liking Lyra so far. She sort of a whiny brat.

3. NOPE. Series.

A series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE. after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it, or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore.

The Inheritance Cycle. I read the first two, and I just can’t motivate myself to read to more huge books when I don’t really care about the main character. I spent all of Eldest groaning and putting down the book every time Eragon came in, sooo… Nope.

Shadow and BoneMastiff4. NOPE. Popular pairing.

A ship you don’t support.

Alina and The Darkling. I’m sorry, but ew. I have nothing more to say on the matter. Just ew.

5. NOPE. Plot twist.

A plot twist you didn’t see coming or didn’t like.

There was something very big, very shocking, and very heartbreaking at the end of Mastiff, that I just didn’t like. I mean, I still loved the book, but that plot twist made me sort of mad!

[su_spoiler title=”Spoilers” icon=”chevron”]TUNSTALL!!!
If you’ve read the book that’s all I should need to say. You know what I’m talking about.
And if you haven’t read the book why on earth are you snooping in the spoiler tag?![/su_spoiler]

Paper and Fire6. NOPE. Protagonist action/decision.

A character decision that made you shake your head NOPE.

Jess did a Very Stupid Thing at the end of Paper and Fire, and I am absolutely furious with him. He is an idiot. And seriously? He couldn’t have come up with any other plan? There had to be SOMETHING!

7. NOPE. Genre.

A genre you will never read.

Ummm… I tend to be pretty open to trying new genres, but I’d have to say that the one genre I have no intention of ever reading is erotica.

8. NOPE. Book format.

Book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.

None. I’ll read my books in any format.

However if we’re talking solely about buying the book then audiobooks. I like them well enough, but I would never spend my money on one.

9. NOPE. Trope.

A trope that makes you go NOPE.

Love Triangles. I hate them with a fiery passion, and I would be perfectly happy to never read a love triangle again.

10. NOPE. Recommendation.

A book recommendation that is constantly hyped and pushed at you that you simply refuse to read.

Most of my recommendations come from the same two people, and I tend to trust their recommendations  enough to read most of what they recommend.

11. NOPE. Cliche/pet peeve.

A cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.

I’m really not sure. I’m sure there’s plenty out there, but nothings coming to mind right now…

Lioness Rampant12. NOPE. Love interest.

The love interest that’s not worthy of being one. A character you don’t think should have been a viable love interest.

Liam from Lioness Rampant. I don’t know why, but I just have an unreasonable hatred of him. And every time he opens his mouth to flirt with Alanna he annoys me. And he couldn’t accept her magic. And I hate him.

13. NOPE. Book.

A book that shouldn’t have existed that made you say NOPE.

Ummm… I’m too mean for this. There’s been plenty of books I’ve disliked, but none that I hated enough to say that they shouldn’t exist.

14. NOPE. Villain.

A scary villain/antagonist you would hate to cross and would make you run in the opposite direction.

Bellatrix Lestrange. I really don’t ever want to meet Bellatrix Lestrange. I don’t think this needs any more explanation.

15. NOPE. Death.

A character death that still haunts you.

This one from The Mortal Instruments.

[su_spoiler title=”Spoilers” icon=”chevron”]MAX!!!! I still can’t get over his death! He was just so young, and sweet, and it was written so emotionally! I still can’t hear the name Max without thinking of him, and just wanting to sob, because MAX!!![/su_spoiler]

16. NOPE. Author.

An author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.

None luckily.

I TAG

No pressure to do it if you’ve already done it, or don’t want to, but I tag:

Bookstormgirl

Leonora @ Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts

Charvi @ Not Just Fiction

Swetlana @ The Caffeinated Bookworm

And anyone else who’s reading this and wants to steal it is welcome to of course!

Do you agree/disagree with any of my answers? Who’s a villain you would hate to encounter? have you read any NOPE books?

    • Oh my gosh yes! For some reason she didn’t even occur to me! (Probably because I was talking to Larkin at the time, and was sort of stuck, and begged her for help, and she hasn’t read The Dark Artifices yet…) But she totally was even more sad than Max, you’re right! Whaaaaaaa, now I’m sad!

  1. Bellatrix is scary. No empathy and eagerness to hurt? I’d be scared if we even made eye contact. Love triangles are so over done and frankly, kinda sloppy in my opinion. I never quite liked them in any novel 😦 It just ruins the book for me.

  2. ohhh I don’t pair Alina/Darkling either! I was SO confused by that ship.😂Mine was Alina/Nikolai so yeahhh that didn’t go how I planned either (which is FINE Nikolai is too good for this world!! PRECIOUS CINNAMON SON.) And ugh to Beatrix I do hate her too. Also very much hate Umbridge. *shudders*

    • I just don’t get it. Like, why? I actually shipped Alina and Mal though, which I know is a pretty unpopular opinion too… I love Nikolai (way more than Mal), but I just didn’t think he and Alina were right for each other… But still, that is a WAY more understandable ship, because Nikolai is amazing!

  3. OH NOOOO NOW YOU’VE GOTTEN ME SCARED TO READ WARRIOR WITCH. T_T I loved the first two books in the series and can’t deal with a bittersweet ending. D: BUT I TOTALLY AGREE ABOUT NOT SHIPPING ALINA + THE DARKLING. Weird-ass villain redemption arcs are not for me, thank you. Also omg I actually kind of want to meet Bellatrix? There’s just this novelty about her character that I’d like to witness in real life. xD

    • Oh, hahaha, sorry 😬 It wasn’t a bad ending exactly… It’s definitely worth reading still. I was just to young to fully appreciate it…

  4. OMG WHAT NOW.

I loved Star Crossed and I have a copy of Liar’s Moon and haven’t read it yet and had no idea it was a planned/cancelled trilogy. UGH. The first book was so good! 😥

Lyra is a bit of a whiny brat. She does mature as the series goes on, so stay tuned! Plus, in book 2 you get will, who is fantastic.

    • I’m so mad they cancelled it! I didn’t realize until I read book two, and it ended on this huge cliffhanger, and I’m so frustrated!

And that’s good to know about Lyra… I don’t think I could stand it if she didn’t mature a bit…

  5. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the Inheritance Cycle! Eragon was SO BORING. When I read Eldest I only cared about his cousin. I think I actually got through Brisingr too though? I don’t remember anything about it, and I never got around to reading The last one. I hate love triangles too! I HATE ‘EM. I wish there weren’t so many of them in all the books everywhere. It infuriates me to no end. I guess we can rant and rage together on this. Eep, I would hate to run into Bellatrix Lestrange as well. I mean, frankly I would be terrified to run into any villain. I would pretty much die. Peter Wiggin, Uriah Heap and Bill Sikes are a few others that come to mind.

    • Right? Everybody loves Eragon, and I just find it so boring! But I really liked his cousin so I kept reading! I’m glad I’m not alone with this opinion 🙂
