My One Year Blogiversary! – Q&A + New Dividers!

My One Year Blogiversary

My One Year Blogiversary

Today I’m celebrating my 1st blogiversary! I’ve been blogging for one whole year. Wow.
On the one hand, I sort of can’t believe I’ve already been blogging for one year (I still don’t really know what I’m doing…), but on the other hand, it feels like I’ve been in this community for forever. You guys have all been so welcoming, and I’ve met so many wonderful people, and I just don’t even know what I would do without this community!
Truly, it means the world to me to have somewhere that I can vent and rant and shriek and squeal to my hearts content, and know that instead of being laughed at, or boring people, there’s people out there who feel the same way I do, and who totally get what I’m talking about.
Somewhere I can talk about that exciting new release I can’t shut up about, or that amazing heartbreaking book I just finished and will never be recovered from. Somewhere I can rant about that awful book I hated, or the fact that my preorder isn’t coming until almost two weeks after release date (!!! WHYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!).
I love you guys, and thank you so much for being so supportive of me on this amazing journey.
Blogging can be hard sometimes, and yes, sometimes I complain, or forget to post, but this community makes it all worth it. So thanks.
Yeah, okay, too much sappy. I will stop now. As you may have noticed (I’ve only been begging everybody for questions for the last, like… three posts), I’m going to do a Q&A to celebrate. I wish I could do something nice for you guys, like a giveaway or something, but… I’m broke.* Maybe next year. But today I’ll do a Q&A instead. Hope you enjoy!
Also look, I made new graphics! I like them a lot more than my old ones, although I did still make them in half an hour in a program not meant for this sort of thing, sooo… They could be better.
*You can pretend I’m doing a giveaway…? Imaginary giveaway! I’m giving away air. Yay! Why am I writing this while I’m sleep deprived?

Q – Why did you start blogging?

A – Short version: I found a book blog I liked, and thought it looked like fun.

Long version: I found a book blog I liked, and was so excited, because there was someone else who liked the same sorts of books as me, and I was getting so many new recommendations, and I basically wouldn’t shut up about it to my parents.
So my mum suggested that since I liked this blog so much, and since I always had so much to day about books, I could start my own blog. I latched on to the idea immediately, because I thought it sounded fun, and I could already tell I liked the community.

I don’t think I ever predicted how much I would love it.

Q – What kind of dragon would you like to have as a pet?

A – Hmmm… Any type of dragon. But more specifically… A huge, feisty, fire-breathing dragon, that let me ride it. Because like, who doesn’t want to ride a fire-breathing dragon?

Q – How do you choose what book you’re going to read next?

A – I’m very much a mood reader, so it’s basically just whatever is calling to me the most at the moment.

However sometimes I’m responsible, and I try to read my library books/books I borrowed from someone first. I sometimes succeed.

Q – Are you celebrating your blogiversary with cookies, or cake?

A – Sadly neither.
I would probably choose cookies though… because I’m currently craving these delicious cookies that we make, that are super chocolatey and fudgey, and have raspberry jam in the middle, and THEY ARE SO GOOD! But we just had a batch… less than a week ago… and oops, we ate those really fast… I made those last Monday, and they were probably gone by Wednesday… oops. And also oops, that went really off topic really fast.

Q – Which of your posts received the most interaction?

A – I got both the most comments, and the most page views on this (slightly cringey) old post about homeschoolers in books… It’s one of my earlier posts, slots of cringe, but it’s actually one I’m fairly proud of…

Homeschooled And Proud Of It

Q – How does a person get started with blogging? What do you recommend?

A – Ummm… I still barely know what I’m doing myself to be honest. And there’s really no right or wrong way to blog.

My suggestion is just get your platform set up, and then blog about what you’re passionate about.

Also there’s lots of posts out there with lots more advice, so my other advice? Google ‘how to start a book blog’. You’ll find lots of good, more in-depth advice.

Q – What was your favourite post to write?

A – I have a few. I always really enjoy the collabs I do with my friend Larkin, and I also had a TON of fun doing my bookshelf tour!

Q – Do you have a goal for reaching a certain number of followers on your blog? If yes, what’s your goal?

A – No, not really. I would eventually like to have enough followers to be able to request ARCs, but… for the most part, I care a lot more about the amount of interaction I’m getting with others than I do about my number of followers. But I would really like ARCs.

Q – Favorite sci-fi YA book?

A – This should not be as hard as it is… I’ve actually only read a few sci-fis, I just REALLY LIKED all of them. So my three favourites (aka, the three I’ve read)* are:

IlluminaeCinderThese Broken Stars

*Okay, I’ve maybe read six… but like, these are a good half of the sci-fis I’ve read still…

Q – Which book on your bookshelf has the most beautiful cover in your opinion?

Hmmm… I really can’t choose, so instead you can have this little collage of all my favourites:

Pretty covers!

I think the top three are my favourites, but I love the bottom four as well!

Q – What is your current fave read of 2018?

A – Ooh, this is a hard one! And because I can’t just answer with one favourite like a normal person, I will give you a list. (Is anyone sensing a theme here? Every time you ask me for a favourite, I give you a half dozen instead.)

  • First of all, I HAVE to mention Six of Crows. This is definitely one of my favourites, and I know it will continue to be a favourite for a looooong time. So why is it not my only answer? Mostly because it feels like cheating TBH, because it’s something I should have read ages ago, and because it’s going to be an all time fave (don’t question my very questionable logic. I’m tired, okay?). Also I just want to list more.
  • Also Shades of Magic. See above answer^^

Now for the less obsessive, but no less amazing, faves:

  • Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman. This book was so beautiful, and if you haven’t read it yet, what are you even doing?! Go read it.
  • Gemina and Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. SO GOOD. SO UNIQUE. SO AMAZING!!! I’m a little obsessed, these books are spectacular!
  • The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed. This book is sadly underrated, but it was SO good, and SO powerful, and SO worth a read.
  • Radio Silence by Alice Oseman. This was quite possible the single most stressful book I have ever read in my life, but it was also so amazing!

Q – Do you feel like there is a correlation between the books you have liked best and the reviews that you are happiest with?

A – Actually no. Sometimes yes I guess, but I usually find I have a really hard time doing justice with my reviews of my favourites, where as the reviews of the 2-4 star books are way easier to write, maybe because I have a mix of good and bad things to say? But yeah, it’s really hard to do a book justice when I think it’s utterly perfect, so I actually often find I’m not that pleases with my reviews of the books I loved.

Q – Has keeping the blog changed the way that you experience reading books?

A – Sort of… I think it’s made me a slightly more critical reader, and also I’m constantly thinking of how I’m going to review/rate it while I’m reading. But they’re very little changes, and they don’t really affect the overall experience for me.

Q – Have you noticed a consistent trend or change in your reviews over time?

A – I think once again, I’m slightly more critical now, so that’s a change… I used to not have anything bad to say in my reviews, even if I didn’t like the book. I just either had trouble pinpointing what I disliked, or I felt too mean to say anything bad. Sooo… I think it’s probably a positive change, as it’s really just that my reviews are more articulate now than they used to be.

As for trends… Most of my really good reviews are just incoherent shrieking.

Q – Does keeping the blog effect how widely you are prone to read?

A – I think keeping a blog has made me both a much more open minded reader, and also a much more picky reader… On the one hand, I have so many books on my TBR already that I very rarely pick up a book I haven’t at least heard of before. On the other hand though, I’m reading much more broadly genre-wise than I used to. Such as, not just fantasy. I tend to be open to just about any genre now, which I wasn’t really before I started blogging.

Q – If you had to pick the world of any book you’ve read to live in which would it be?

A – Red London from Shades of Magic. It was so rich, and lush, and gorgeous, and beautiful, and I want to live there SO bad. Live in Red London, and go to school at Hogwarts. And this is a valid choice, okay? I could be an Antari and go from Red London to Grey London, where I could then catch The Hogwarts Express to Hogwarts. This is completely logical, and you really can’t deny it. And I mean, the small time gap of a couple hundred years between when I want to go to Hogwarts and when I want to live in Red London isn’t going to be a problem at all. Obviously.

Q – If you could choose any book character to have as a third parent who would it be?

A – I mean, I’m pretty happy with my parents, but I also really loved Molly’s parents in The Upside of Unrequited. And no, I’m not choosing just one of them. I liked them both. They were pretty awesome parents. (Haha, I haven’t read this book for a while, so I think I remember them pretty well… I know I liked them anyways.)

Q – If you could live the plotline of a book as any character, which character and book would you choose and why?

A – Ummm… Something light and fluffy and happy with no murders or quests. Sooo…? Wow, I really don’t read a lot of books like that… Cath from Fangirl? Nah, she made some stupid decisions I would never make. (*cough cough* that assignment. You know the one.) Ummm… Someone from one of Jennifer E Smith’s books maybe? Or ooh! What’s her face from This Adventure Ends. That was light and fluffy. What was her name? Sloane? Maybe? Hahaha, oops, I have no idea.

Q – Is there a book character you would like to have as a friend or sibling?

A – All the Simon Vs and Upside characters… Particularly Simon and Abby and Blue, but also Leah and Molly and Reid. Can I just be part of this amazing group of friends please? And like, Molly and Reid too, even though they aren’t technically part of that group? Pleeeaaaase?!

Q – Do you sometimes choose to read a book because you want to feature it on your blog?

A – Nope. I just read whatever I feel like. I will sometimes choose to write a more in-depth review, or write my review much sooner than I otherwise would have because I want to put it on my blog, but I choose what I read solely based on how interesting it sounds.

Q – If you could own one article of clothing from a book what would it be?

A – Kell’s coat. I mean, duh. I know, I know, this is like the most cliche answer there is, but I REALLY WANT IT, okay? His coat is amazing. It’s just so awesome, and I think just about every bookworm I know feels the same way.

Q – If you could ask one question of any book character what/who would it be?

A – One? I can’t choose. I would just really like to ask all my favourite characters a bunch of little questions that we never got answer, like ‘What’s your favourite colour?’ and ‘What is your earliest memory?’ and ‘What’s your favourite book?’. Because I just want to know those things, okay?

Small Fancy Heart Divider

Q – What book you’ve read had the biggest effect on your world view?

A – The Hate U Give. It was SUCH an eye opening powerful book, and just wow. It definitely changed the way I thought about a lot of things.

Q – If you could shoot any object into space what would it be?

A – A really bad book. For two reasons: One, there would be a random book floating in space, which would be pretty cool. Two, there would be one less copy of the book on earth. I mean, I have yet to find a book I hate quite that much, but even if I just didn’t like it… there would still be plenty of copies left… and they can always print more… and there would still be one less copy on earth… 😀

Q – What is your favorite character you do not think you’d get along with and why?

A – Honestly a lot of my favourite characters. My favourite characters have a tendency to be criminals.

I don’t think I would get along particularly well with Kaz Brekker. I love him, but… I mean he would probably rob me the second I set foot in the Barrel… And that would probably leave me with a bit of a grudge against him…

But he’s still one of my favourite characters, and I mean honestly he’s a big sweetie inside… I just doubt I would get to know him well enough to see that, so I would probably hate him if I were to actually meet him (without having already read about him of course… I could never hate him NOW. But like, if I didn’t know he was Kaz Brekker, or if I hadn’t read Six of Crows…).

Q – If you could recommend one book to everyone on the planet, what would it be?

A – The Hate U Give. It’s such an eye-opening book, and I think everyone should read it. It’s probably the one book that I would say should universally be read by everyone.

And since I already gave that as an answer, I’ll also mention the one book I do recommend to pretty much everyone who hasn’t read it… Harry Potter. I swear, if someone says they haven’t read it, I will instantly try and convince them that they should read it. Immediately. And then offer to lend it to them.

Q – If you could live a day as any non-humanoid from a book who would it be?

A – A dragon! A big, flying, fire-breathing dragon! No specific dragon or anything, just a dragon. Because dragons are amazing.

  3. I love the Tess of the Road cover! But I have not read it. I admit, I had not even heard of it until this moment on your blog. But it looks cool! I am always trying to convince people to read When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead and The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope. Both brilliant books. As a matter of fact, you should read them. Hehe…
Congratulations on your Blogiversary! I am actually coming up on my one year anniversary as well, on June 29th. It’s so weird!
