Book Review: This Savage Song – Fangirling + Soul Eating Monsters!
This Savage Song
by Victoria Schwab
Series: Monsters of Verity
I absolutely adored This Savage Song! It! Was! So! Good!
I’ve had a hold on this at my library for SO long, and I was NOT disappointed!
I want the next book so desperately, and I think I’m going to need to wait another couple months for it! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I am NOT happy about this. Because no. I need it. Now. Not two months from now.
This was my first Schwab book, and I don’t know why I haven’t read anything by her sooner.*
*Oh wait, yes I do. THE LIBRARY WAS BEING SLOW!
Um… honestly this book didn’t have a ton of plot. There was some, but… it wasn’t the focus of the book. It was mostly character driven.
Personally, I didn’t care. I don’t need plot, as long as the other aspects are well done.
To be honest, I didn’t even notice until I sat to down to talk about the plot. And then all of a sudden, I realized I didn’t know what the plot had even been.
But who cares, it was great anyway.
This had such a cool world (Once I figured out how the heck it worked).
Basically every act of violence creates a new monster, and there’s all different types of monsters, and it’s wonderful!
Then there’s all the more political aspects of the world, and the two side of the city are sort of at war with each other. And although that was much less creative, I still loved that part too.
It took me SO long to figure out how it all worked, but I honestly don’t care.* I figured it out eventually, and one I did, wow, was it ever cool!
*No, I am not capable of being rational about this book.
I also adored the characters. THEY WERE SO SO SO AMAZING!
I really liked Kate. I liked her from the first page. And, um, yes, on the first page she… burned down a school chapel. And… yes, I fell in love with her as she was doing that. I don’t at all have questionable taste in characters. Definitely not.
To tell the truth though, I liked her feisty, snarky nature. She made me laugh. Apparently that’s all I need in a character… Who cares about things like morals.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Okay, obviously I have really questionable taste in characters. But I really love Kate. And honestly, she’s a lovely person inside. She just buries it very deep inside.
August was also great. Unlike Kate, he was very nice. He was just one of those characters, who can’t really be described any other way. He was lovely, and he was nice. And he was a soul eating monster. But a nice soul eating monster. Really.
Then there was Ilsa. She was August’s sister, and I LOVED her. She was lovely, and fragile, and she was such a beautiful character.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! IT WAS SPECTACULAR, AND AMAZING, AND WOW! I am SO happy I finally got to read it. And just happy in general. This book left me feeling happy, because it was so wonderful. And mad, because SOMEBODY HAS THE SEQUEL OUT AT THE LIBRARY, AND I NEED IT! Right now.
But mostly, I’m just happy, because this was so good.
I’m sure it had flaws, but I don’t care. This was just so, so, SO wonderful.
If you haven’t already read this, WHY?! You absolutely should! It’s amazing!
And I’m just repeating myself now, so I’ll stop.
Eeep this is one of my absolute FAVOURITES and I’m so so glad you read it!! August is so adorable and heartbreaking ajfdkasld my soft cinnamon monster child. (I also loved the contrast that the human was more monstrous than the monster.) Basically Schwab is a GENIUS and I bow.😂
