2017 Wrap-up! Part One – Amazing Books + Bookworm Shame!

2017 Wrap-up!

Wow, somehow 2017 is almost over, and in just a couple of days it’s going to be 2018! How did that happen?! I almost can’t believe it!

Anyways, I wanted to do something to wrap up 2017 here on my blog, but I wasn’t feeling very creative, and didn’t have the slightest clue what to do. Then I stumbled upon this lovely survey, hosted over at The Perpetual Page Turner.* There’s a whole bunch of questions here about bookish and blogging achievements/favourites, and I’m going to be answering some of them.

Although I admit I only actually started keeping track of what I read sometime in August, so this only actually covers the books I read since then… (and a couple of random ones that I happen to know I read earlier in the year…)

There is a lot of questions, so I’m just going to answer the first half today, and then do the rest in my next post, which should be up the day after tomorrow.

*And by stumbled upon, I really mean half the blogs I follow seem to have done this… So it probably doesn’t really count as stumbling upon it… but I don’t really care.

Number Of Books You Read: 107
Number of Re-Reads: 16? I think?
Genre You Read The Most From: I don’t know… I’m too lazy to figure it out…

1. Best Book You Read In 2017?

I’m not even going to try and pick one. A couple of them are:

  • The Lunar Chronicles
  • A Curse Dark as Gold
  • The Mortal Instruments
  • The Infernal Devices
  • The Orphan Queen/The Mirror King
  • Fangirl
  • Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda
  • Illuminae
  • The Monsters of Verity
  • I’ll Give You the Sun
  • Eliza and Her Monsters
  • Renegades
  • My Lady Jane

Um… yeah, just pretend that’s a couple, and not like, more than a dozen. Hahaha oops.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

I didn’t have many disappointments this year, so I think I’m going to have to go with The Hunger Games. Now don’t get me wrong, I quite enjoyed them, but I had such high expectations, and they just didn’t meet them. It had simply been a bit too hyped up for me.

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

The most surprising book for me was probably Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer. It has just about the most hideous over ever, so bad that, to be honest, I don’t know why I even bothered to pick it up. I’m glad I did though, because it far exceeded my expectations. It wasn’t my favourite book ever, but it was a super fun read, and not at all what I was expecting.

 4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

Um… I usually only really push my friends IRL to read stuff (or more precisely, they’re usually the only ones who I actually know took my recommendations), so I’d have to say probably The Mortal Instruments, because I managed to get three of my friends to read them. After a lot of pestering. They were probably fed up with me by the end, but I think it was worth it, because they all now love it.

 5. Best series you started in 2017? Best Sequel of 2017? Best Series Ender of 2017?

Um… I started and finished a lot of series this year… For one that came out this year, I would probably have to say that Our Dark Duet was the best sequel/series ender. It left me an absolute sobbing mess!

 6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2017?

I um… only just discovered Marissa Meyer and Cassandra Clare this year… I know, I’m ashamed as well. Aside from them, I might have to say Jodi Meadows. I’ve read quite a few of her books in the past couple months, and I’ve completely fallen in love.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

I don’t actually really have genres I don’t usually read. Or… I do, but I just don’t read them. Aka, horror, because it would give me nightmares.

So… I don’t really have any books that would fit this question.

 8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Probably Eliza and Her Monsters… It wasn’t thrilling or action packed, but it was certainly unputdownable. I read it in every spare second I had… usually if I only have a minute or two, I don’t bother to pick up my book, and instead wait until I can sit and read for a longer period. Not so With this book though. I also stayed up till at least one in the morning reading it. Oops. But I so don’t regret it!

9. Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Um… would it be unreasonable to say Eliza and Her Monsters again…? Yes? Okay fine. In that case, I’ll probably reread The Mortal Instruments soon, because I only half remember the plot, soooo…

I’ll also probably reread Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda before the movie comes out.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

I have to choose just one?! No way. I refuse. That is not possible.

Pretty Covers

11. Most memorable character of 2017?

For some reason the person who’s coming to mind right now is Thorne… I don’t know why, but I guess he is pretty memorable.

There’s a lot of other memorable characters too, but I suppose the first one to come to mind is probably the most memorable.

 12. Most beautifully written book read in 2017?

Hands down I’ll Give You the Sun. It took a bit of getting used to, and the style certainly isn’t for everyone, but I thought it was absolutely beautiful, and I am so in love with the writing!

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2017?

Probably I’ll Give You the Sun (Again), Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and Eliza and Her Monsters. All three of them just really made me think.

 14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2017 to finally read?

The Mortal Instruments and The Lunar Chronicles! Only two of my favourite series ever! But for some reason I didn’t read them until this year! Obviously I was insane. Also I hated the covers. And I wasn’t really reading a lot of YA before this year. BUT STILL! How did I possibly think not reading them was a good idea?!?!

 15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2017?

One? ONE?! I can’t pick a favourite quote from one book, let alone from one hundred and seven!

I can’t possibly pick one, so instead I just picked the first one I that jumped out to me off of goodreads… It’s more of a conversation than a quote, but I swear it’s a conversation me and my brother have had. Multiple times.

“What’s a dementor?”
I mean, I can’t even. “Nora, you are no longer my sister.”
“So it’s some Harry Potter thing,” she says.”

I also really loved this quote from The Mirror King… It’s sort of sappy and romantic, but for some reason it just really stood out to me.

“No matter the masks we wear, we always end up together.”

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2017?

Home Child at 144 Pages - Winter at 827 Pages

 17. Book That Shocked You The Most

Our Dark Duet. I did NOT expect that, and I am NEVER going to recover from it. Ever.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

It’s really hard to choose just one… If I had to though, I think I might say Simon and Blue from Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda… This might just be because I just reread this a couple days ago, but they’re also just really cute together, and I want them to be happy!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Ooh, this is hard! There’s SO many I love! The first one that comes to mind, probably simply because I just read The Bane Chronicles, is the relationship between Magnus and Catarina and Ragnor. They are SO funny.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2017 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Um… I discovered so many new authors this year, I didn’t actually read many by my old favourites.* Probably Saving Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea… It wasn’t as good as the first two books, but it was still really beautiful and heartbreaking.

*Probably mostly because those old favourites are mostly MG authors… And I’ve sort of outgrown their books…

21. Best Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

The Mortal Instruments and The Lunar Chronicles. Anybody sensing a theme here?

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2017?

I’m not sure… I don’t really get crushes on fictional characters… I fall completely in love with them, but not like that.

23. Best 2017 debut you read?

I… um… didn’t read any. I actually barely read and books released this year, let alone debuts… I know, I know, it’s shameful. But I just… didn’t.

Wow, this post is huge… sorry about that. Also, I’m so sorry I disappeared for a bit there, I was just so busy with christmas, and not really feeling motivated to post… I’m really going to try and stay on top of it better, but I apologize if I disappear again.

What were some of your favourite books this year? How many books did you read? What books are you probably going to read again next year? Which book had the prettiest cover?
